I am getting this error message when I try to open .mht files:
You need to have Microsoft Outlook Express installed to work with Single
File WEb Pages.

I have tried removing and reinstalling outlook express through the control
panel. Reinstalled Outlook 2007. I need to edit the layout and content of
these files that come from a custom app in word 2007. I also get this
problem in XP.

Hi Dawa,

That's a rather unusual message for Outlook Express.
Are you able to open the .MHT file in Internet Explorer or MS Word 2007 directly?

If you can open it in Internet Explorer, but not in Word 2007 then from Internet Explorer use File=>Save As and save as a .HTM file
and see if you can open that in Word 2007.

The message comes from word 2007, not from Outlook Express. I can't even
reinstall outlook express anymore. The only version I can find is tagged to
IE6. A little late.

I was able to decode the message and view the base html file in word after
saving it as a complete html file out of IE7. IE would only display the
code for the page as text, not the formated output. Look like more work for
the developers.

Hi Dawa

Assuming that you don't have an add-in of some type in Word 2007 interfering, if in Word 2007 you turn on the
'Confirm file format conversions on open'
option in Word Options
(Alt, F, I, A)
Advanced=>General

and then use File=>Open to open either the .HTM or .MHT file does Word recognize it as HTML in the popup dialog?

Outlook Express v6 is the last Windows XP version and is part of both IE6 and IE7. Windows Mail v6.1 is the Vista version,
although I would suspect that it's an add-in in Word that is looking for it :)

Try starting Word in Safe mode (hold ctrl key when starting) to see if you get the same message when opening the file via
File=>Open.

It does not recognize the file properly. If I pick html it will open part of
the file. It lists it as a SINGLE FILE WEB PAGE.

What add-in should I be looking for. The only active one listed is
Active Application Add-ins
Person Name

Hi Dawa,

Do you get the same result if you open the .HTM page in Word 2007 that you saved from the .MHT file from Internet Explorer?

If Word opens that one correctly it's possible that there are issues with the size of the MHT file content or that the .MHT file may
be corrupted. As it wasn't created in Word, as I understand your description, it's possible that it contains web features Word
doesn't understand.

For an Add-in something related to the application that you mentioned was generating the original .MHT file?
