Need proper word to look up

I have PowerPoint 2007 with Windows XP. I have a slide with two objects on
it. In a slide show, I want only the first object to appear. Then when I
click to advance, I want the same slide but with the second object added to
it. I have done this in the past with previous versions of PowerPoint, but do
not know the proper word that this is called to look it up in the Help menu
to find out how to do it.

I am unable to find anything that will help by looking at all the tabs and
groups on the ribbon.

What is this called?

I think you mean 'custom animation'

Select the second shape
Animations Tab > Custom animation
Add Effect choose any entrance effect

Run the show and see if that's what you mean

What is this called?

Well, if you do this on the same slide, it is called animation. If you do it
on two different slides, I'm not sure there is name for it. But the way I
would do it is to insert a duplicate slide (in 2007, I believe it is
available from the pull-down menu next to the Insert Slide button on the
ribbon). Then you can add the second object to the duplicated slide so the
two slides will be identical except for the added object.
