Need Suggestion with Resource Cost Rates

R

Rully Kusuma

We have following condition:

Let's say we have Project A from November 2005 to April 2006. Our Resource
Rates increased on January 2006 BUT ONLY for projects created after January
2006. How can I make those resources rates involved in Project A stay in
2005 Rates? I know that we can use Cost table A, B, C, and so on but the
problem is we have two type of cost each year; ie 2006A and 2006 and we
still have Projects using 2004 rates. There aren't enough space left.

Any suggestions on how do I handle this? Thank you in advance.

Hi Rully,

I may be *way* off base here but as no one else has jumped in, I'll try.
For each rate table there are multiple lines.
If a resource's rate increased as of 1 January 2006 on the rate table,
enter the effective date and the new rates. The new rate will only be
applied to assignments starting after the effective date.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Rully:

Julie's suggestion may solve part of your problem, but it sounds as though
you're trying to capture billing rates, not cost rates. Remember that
Project is designed for the latter, not the former. It's highly unlikely
that your cost rate for a resource is at several different levels across
many different projects, and therefore the system is not designed to
accommodate that. Working with multiple cost tables and using the as-of
feature in the cost rates may be a good enough workaround, but no
guarantees.

Thank you, Julie.

I tried that but as I said below for projects created before 2006, we want
the rates to stay the same (as in 2005 rates). If I put new effective dates
and rates, the 2005 Projects budget would jump and we don't want that.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for your response. I think what you said was right, I didn't
realize that. I need to get back to our Project Managers here and discuss
that.

Thank you.

Hi Rully,

You're welcome. My understanding of the effective dates in the cost
tables is that the effective dates will only change rates from the
effective date forward. For example, if you have the following in the
rate table:

1 Jan 05 $10.00 $15.00
1 Jan 06 $20.00 $30.00

Any tasks occurring from 1 Jan 05 through 31 Dec 05 will use the $10.00
rate
only tasks from 1 Jan 06 on will use the new rate.
From help
=============================
That rate stays in effect until the next Effective Date listed in the
cost rate table. On the date a new rate is to take effect, the rate
changes throughout Microsoft Office Project 2003, for example, in the
Std. Rate and Ovt. Rate fields on the Resource Sheet, and in resource
cost calculations for assigned tasks.
==============================

I hope this helps.
