Need to clarify some things about Entourage - please help

Hi everyone, I recently decided to start using an e-mail client app, so I opted for Entourage 2008 (v. 13.0).

I established my Gmail account through IMAP and it seems to be working fine. In the Root Folder I typed [Gmail] so that I would get one drop-down menu only, i.e. the Gmail folder structure (as opposed to two menus that you would otherwise get if you left the Root Folder empty). Was I right in doing so? Or is there an even better method to only have 1 drop-down? It would be awesome if there was a way to get Gmail folder structure + display of all Label folders right off the bat so that you wouldn't have to do the [Gmail]/label thing. Is it possible?

I am still fairly new to this, so there are many questions that I need to clarify:

1. Why doesn't Entourage offer any preview whatsoever of attachments? I find it highly irritating when I receive pics in an attachment Entourage won't load them for preview - instead there will be horizontal lines for each pic instead of pic previews. The only method to view pics appears to be to download them. Is there a way to fix that?? (Yes, I do have "Show attached pics and movies in message" checked.)

2. How to set "Advanced account settings" for the best? Should I just keep all Special Folders ticked? (For each of them it currently lists [Gmail]/... folder)

3. For Outgoing Mail (SMTP), should I use port 465 or 587? Which one is more recommended? Or are they 100% identical?

4. Since I use Entourage for IMAP Gmail access, would it be a good thing to disable POP in Gmail settings? Or does it not affect anything at all if I leave it on?

5. If I use the "Live Sync (stay connected with server)" setting, would I even need the Send/Receive function then? Doesn't Live Sync option do all the work?

6. When I download an e-mail with an attachment and then move it to a certain folder (label) within Entourage, why do I have to re-download that e-mail's content after I have moved it to that label and accessed it from there?

Thank you in advance for all the answers.

Hi everyone, I recently decided to start using an e-mail client app, so I
opted for Entourage 2008 (v. 13.0).

v13 contains special functionality for Exchange accounts only. The 12.2.0
version of Entourage gives you all the improvements for POP and IMAP
accounts.
I established my Gmail account through IMAP and it seems to be working fine.
In the Root Folder I typed [Gmail] so that I would get one drop-down menu
only, i.e. the Gmail folder structure (as opposed to two menus that you would
otherwise get if you left the Root Folder empty). Was I right in doing so? Or
is there an even better method to only have 1 drop-down? It would be awesome
if there was a way to get Gmail folder structure + display of all Label
folders right off the bat so that you wouldn't have to do the [Gmail]/label
thing. Is it possible?

It does show attachments. If you don't download the entire message the
attachment will not show up. What view are you using?

2. How to set "Advanced account settings" for the best? Should I just keep all

folder)

Links above should help.
3. For Outgoing Mail (SMTP), should I use port 465 or 587? Which one is more
recommended? Or are they 100% identical?

This varies for providers. Gmail posts this info. 465
4. Since I use Entourage for IMAP Gmail access, would it be a good thing to
disable POP in Gmail settings? Or does it not affect anything at all if I
leave it on?

5. If I use the "Live Sync (stay connected with server)" setting, would I even

This option can vary in performance. I don't have it selected for my Gmail
IMAP account. YMMV
6. When I download an e-mail with an attachment and then move it to a certain
folder (label) within Entourage, why do I have to re-download that e-mail's
content after I have moved it to that label and accessed it from there?

This sounds like the Gmail Label feature. I don't have experience with that.
Are you moving to your IMAP folders or to folders "On My Computer"?

In the future, it's best to ask just one question per topic. Having so many
questions together makes it less likely someone would respond to just one
part of your message.

Diane, I appreciate your prompt response.

In response to your reply:

- I initially had 12.2.1 installed, but then upgraded to Exchange (13.0). Is that wrong? Does that break anything? I thought the newer the better.

- I use the preview pane on the right to view messages. But even when I click "Get the entire message," it will only list, say, all the pics that were attached in the message, but NO thumbnails or preview of them. Why? (here's an example: <http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/matic001/Picture1-8.png> )

4. Since I use Entourage for IMAP Gmail access, would it be a good thing to disable POP in Gmail settings? Or does it not affect anything at all if I leave it on?

6. I was moving mail to my IMAP folders.....

Thanks again!

It's confusing to many users, but v13 only benefits users that have Exchange
accounts that qualify for the upgrade. It doesn't break anything.

Entourage 2008 will not show jpgs on the message if they are over 400kb.
It's a known bug. Another bug is editing the subject in Entourage 2008. You
have to use a script to do this.

4. Since I use Entourage for IMAP Gmail access, would it be a good thing to

I don't think it matters if you aren't using it. Normally, you disable
unless you want to use it both ways.
6. I was moving mail to my IMAP folders.....

I think you might be confusing Gmail's labels with Entourage folders. I
don't use these features in my Gmail accounts. Maybe someone that does can
offer how they use it.

Diane, thank you for help!

I'm really disappointed to hear that Entourage won't show jpg files bigger than 400 kb. Why hasn't anything been done about this bug? I'm sure other users would appreciate it too!

I suspect that with all the changes that is happening in Outlook for Mac
v14, they are spending all their time on the next version. Just a guess on
my part.
