of course i would need a clients table, but i need to have criminal and
private. want to add offences or matters. also want to be able to link an
invoice etc. been a while since i used access, so any help would be
appreciated.
not too sure about relationships, whether 1 to 1 1 to many etc.

.... probably professional. If your (or your friend's) clients will depend
on this database to stay out of prison, and you (or your friend) will
depend on it to stay in work, then don't you think it would be a good idea
to start with someone who knows what they are doing?

Sorry to sound negative, but this sounds like a really scary way to run a
solicitor's office...

Best wishes

I have to agree with Tim. If I had a fairly complex legal problem to
solve, I'd be inclined to consult a professional attorney rather than
winging it on my own with some amateur help (even with support from a
legal professional's newsgroup).

Don't go cheap on this: cheap is expensive, often!
