Need to Format Hard Drive

M

mnf

For the third time I need to reformat my hard drive to
deal w/ issues related to XP. I just added the Office
2003 Upgrade product. How do I work around the issue of
the upgrade product needing to find a qualifying product
when I go to reinstall, since all info related to prior
products will have been destroyed in the reformat?

Thanks,
MNF

Are you referring to Windows XP or Office XP? Actually detailing the
problems would be more helpful than making random grumbles So many people
recount that they've gone to absurd lengths with reinstalling or
reformatting when all they needed to do was something much simpler.

Do you still have the qualifying product CDs? If yes, then all you need to
do when installing the upgrade is to put in the qualifying CD, point Office
at it, once it is recognized you can put back in the upgrade CD and continue
installing.

BTW, the only time I had to reinstall Windows XP was due to user stupidity -
tried something that was clearly marked as unsupported but tried it anyway.

I have to reformat a hard drive because of issues related
to Windows XP. And, I wish I could do something simpler.
I've exhausted all of the easy steps. Always working w/
technical support, I now must reformat the hard drive.
Back to my question, though.

How do I work around that qualifying product issue once
the hard drive has been reformatted?

Golly, Millie, I guess I could be stupid, but given that
the problem started with instructions from a person in
Tech Support who told me to do something stupid, and I
followed his instruction, I don't think it was me.

Now I'm left to clean up his mess. Thanks for your help.

I believe what Milly was saying is that you really have to make a mess
of things to warrant a format and reinstall for Windows XP and a
reformat may not actually be necessary. I doubt she was saying you
were stupid. :)

Instead of reformatting you may want to post the problems you are
encountering in the Windows XP newsgroup. It could be the solution to
the problem you are encountering is something simple.

btw, I would stop working with the Tech Support that guided you down
this path in the first place!

The stupidity was on my part for trying something that was clearly
unsupported - it was not a comment on your problem.

Again, if you have the CDs with the qualifying product, you should have no
problems installing the upgrade once you have completed the format and
reinstall of Windows. If you do not have the CDs, you are not entitled to
use the upgrade as the EULA for the upgrade specifies that the qualifying
product becomes a part of the upgrade license and cannot be separated.
