Need To know Internals Of MS Word

I am looking for a way to programmatically open an MS Word document and check
what version of word was used to create it.

The problem I'm having is as follows. Our company has older word documents
that are used as repositories for text to create new documents. They simply
copy the contents of those documents into new ones.

The problem is that whenever they copy data from an MS Word document created
in an older version of Word and they paste it into a document that is a newer
version of word they end up with odd problems:

1) their printer defaults have changed, or
2) a mysterious black line simply appears on the page.

This is happening when copying data from Word 2000 to Word XP.

I'm guessing that there are values that are being carried over that are not
always compatible.
