Need to move Office 2003 AIP location

S

SS

Hello, We have installed Office 2003 SP1 from a network AIP. Patching the
source and reinstalling is taking too long on the workstatations. I would
like to move the AIP local or use a FF patch and maintain repair and feature
add/removes. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks
SS

All post SP2 patches for office 2003 are all ff updates. (SP2 also has ff
patch).
If you have installed any post SP1 patch on the AIP, you should be able to
use sms or wsus to install the patches wihtout having to update your AIP.
Otherwise, you need to copy the AIP source locally on all the computers and
run a msiexec /fvm \\path to new source MSI file

Thanks for your response. What do you suggest for future FF updates. Do I
need to patch the now local AIP and then apply the patch from there?

Why do you wanna do that ? Its double the work with no use.
The reason why you want to have an AIP on all machines is that you dont want
to have a network location AIP.
The reason why its needed is because it might require the source files to do
the comparison when installing patches or repair operation.

If you have not patched the AIP with any post SP2 patches, you should be
okay to install any security patch directly on the client machines. NO need
to apply it to the AIP first.

The workstations were installed from an AIP patched to SP1. This process
took too long and will not be used again. If install the SP2 patch directly
on a machine it can no longer repair or add features. Now I am thinking of
copying an SP2 patched AIP to the workstation and reinstall Office to 1)
repoint it locally 2) to bump the Office install to SP2.

This next part is not clear.... for future updates can I simply run the ff
MSP w/o the need to touch the AIP?

thx again

If you install SP2 patch directly on a machine, it will still be able to do
repair or add features. Installing SP2 cannot change the location of the MSI
file as SP2 will only have an MSP file (not MSI).

As all machines have off2003 with SP1 now, its better to leave the current
AIP there because its only used when doing repair or add/remove features,
which is less frequently used.
Install SP2 directly onto the client machines. Dont bother to install SP2 on
AIP and then running the re-cache command.
I would suggest this way.

On the other hand, if you certainly want a local location, then, you need to
run the /fvm command that i gave you before. Even in that case, dont bother
to install SP2 on AIP.

NOTE:
*****
Make sure you have NOT installed any post SP1 patches on the AIP.

Let me know if its still unclear.
