Three weeks ago, my Laptop computer of almost 4 years maybe longer, died
a horrible death.

I was actually using the computer and the suddenly had the spinning
Pizza wheel then went to white screen the to blinking question mark
folder. All within a span of 15 seconds or less.

Three weeks later (this week) I received back with a Brand spanking new
Hard drive.

I am trying to restore my applications. Files I know are history/toast. :-(

I want to put both Office 2004 and Office 2008 on.

What recommendations or suggestions to make everything go smoothly?

Even with a 1 mb upload/download DSL line I know it will probably be
days if I have to go through every update. Best I can remember there
were about 20 different updates to 2004. And about 5-6 on 2008.

Do I have go through all the incremental updates, or does the last
update have everything rolled into one?

I do know to preserve the converter engine in 2008n I have to install
and update 2004 first.

Hi Phillip -

Sorry to hear about the death of your drive - I hope you gave it a proper
burial. The reinstallations, though, shouldn't be anywhere near as painful
as you anticipate :)

For Office 2004 you should only need to apply 11.5.0 - 11.5.3 & for 2008 the
SP1 (12.1.0) & 12.1.5 should be it. Just run AutoUpdate in each of the
suites in order to get it done.

Taz,

I ran into a Sticky wicket. I upgraded from Office2001 to 2004 and
therefore I have 2004 Upgrade Package. Since this is new Drive It
couldn't find any traces of a upgraded product I am unsure if know where
my 2001 Package or serial number or license key is.

Does MS keep a Database on pages sold and serial numbers? How do I get
around this I don't remember how I originally installed on this
PowerBook But I know I bought this specifically to put on this computer

It did allow me to install though I haven't opened yet. And I did do all
the updates.

Even though it's an "upgrade" package it's a full installation, so you don't
actually need to have a prior version installed, nor do you need the key
from the prior version. You just need to have it available. If you can't
find your 2001 - or other version - disk you can use any earlier version you
can borrow. Just insert it when the installer wants the prior version & use
the key for the new version to complete the installation.

I don't think MS maintains any such data, but you might get in touch with
their tech support to see if there are any other options.

Funny Thing,

installed my 2008 version which *is* an upgrade as well. I had no
problem because it detected 2004.

My only install of 2001 is on my OS9 Drive on my G4-500. Problem is it
went bad in November.

Everything did update on 2004, as well as 2008. So both are up to date.
If I can find my 2001 CD is that all that's needed?

I'm not sure I understand: Are you saying that the installation/updating of
both 2004 & 2008 was successful but the programs won't run?

If launching an app is prompting you for a "prior version" then yes, if you
can get your hands on *anyone's* source disk for Office 2001, X, or 98
(maybe even as far back as version 6.0) you should be able to use it to
validate the installation of 2004 & 2004 should allow finalizing 2008.

No what I was saying; both installed fully, both install updated fully.
Office 2008 works because in found 2004 installed.

2004 wouldn't work because the start up program would let it run without
finding a qualifying product.

Here's my History Was back when I was using 7100/66 I bought full
version of Excel and Word.

By use of a USB Floppy Drive when I purchased my G4-500 I was able to
install on the G4-500.

They got so they would not run correctly after the update to 9.2.2.

Then I purchased a Full upgrade under a special deal MS was running for
Office 2001. It was a Full version not an upgrade. And would work on
either OSX.2 or OS 9.2.2. At the time I had an Apple CD drive (external).

The G4 had a super Drive DVD-RAM Drive So I installed O2001 on the 9.2.2
Drive and left it there. Now when I put a new drive in I bought Office 2004.

And it was able to determine I had 2001 on my OS 9.2.2 Drive. So it
installed fine.

Now fast forward a few years. I bout my Laptop I hooked it up and
attached my Desktop as a Firewire Disk. And when I wen to install 2004
again It again located the 2001 install.

Now fast forward again when I purchased 2008 I was able to install 2008
with no problem, on the laptop as it already had 2004 on it.

Now fast forward to November my main Hard Drive that had the O2001
installed died sounded like some one using a hand saw or hand chisel.
And my Drive that has OSX.3.9 that had both 2004 and 2008 , is nor dead
but has developed a problem which can only be cured by a complete wipe
and reinstall of everything. I can still get to my files but can't use
as the drive to which I boot.

Now moving to 3 weeks ago. Drive on this computer (lap top Died was
using and then all of a sudden with 10-15 second went from Spinning
Pizza wheel to white screen to screen with folder with blinking question
mark. And I could have cooked eggs and sausage on the bottom of my
computer.

Now I at am today.

Gee I am a bad typist I will fix misspells and boldface to indicate
misspellings:
