Need to Reset/remove Excel profile

E

Enrique

I have a user on a Windows XP, Office 2002 system with a corrupt Excel
profile. Is there a way to reset/remove the files responsible so that it
will go back it it's default settings.

Hi Enrique,

I understand that you would like to reset Excel file/registry profile to
its default status, is that correct?

Fist of all, I would suggest you try the steps below:

1. From Start-->Run-->excel /regserver.
2. Press OK to continue.

Moreover, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Step 1. Let's move the files out of the startup folder. (Suppose you have
installed the Excel 2002 in default folder)

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10\XLSTART, move the files
out of that folder if exist.
2. Go to %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART, move the
files out of there as well.

Step 2. Disable the Norton Antivirus Office plug-in if you've installed
Norton AV program in your computer.

As we all know, the Norton Office Plug-in may cause so many problems, such
as preventing Office documents from opening and causing Word/Excel to crash
on exit, that users of Office applications simply can not leave it enabled.

In order to disable the Office plug-in, please refer to the following KB
article:

Step 3. Rename the Excel.pip file

Excel remembers what menus and commands have been used and displays these
most recently used menus first. Excel hides the unused commands in its
expandable menus. Excel stores this usage data along with menu animation
settings in a file named Excel.pip.

This file can become corrupted. If this occurs, you may experience problems
when you start Excel. In this situation, locate the Excel.pip file and
rename it. After you rename the file, Excel rebuilds a new .pip file the
next time you start Excel. Use the Windows search feature to locate the
Excel.pip file and rename it to Excel.pip1. (By default, the folder for
that file is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10)

Step 4. Disable Add-ins Under the Tools Menu
In some cases, this issue may happen due to the corrupted add-ins for
Excel. Then we should disable it to see whether the issue will go:

On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins. Click to clear the check boxes for any
add-ins that are selected, and then click OK.

Step 5. Delete the Registry Keys
When the registry keys are corrupted, some unexpected behavior may happen.
Thus, please delete the following registry keys:

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.
Excel 2003
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0

Last but not least, please repair the Excel to ensure the integrity.

In Excel-->Help-->Detect and Repair, do a repair for Excel.

If anything is unclear, please follow my post. :)

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao
