Need to write files to DVD using XP

My PC supposedly has a DVD burner. I need to save some files from my C drive
to an alternate place, so I ordered an external hard drive. In the meantime,
my PC is not stable, so I'd like to back up some important files to DVD.
Problem is, the PC is not recognizing the DVD in the drive, but it's there.
When I researched it, I found in the MS help forum that XP does not support
copying files to DVD, which makes no sense to me. Any suggestions?

A dvd drive usually has specific burning software supplied, often Nero

You are correct. XP natively will only burn to CD, not DVD.
You need an application that will do so.
