Nested Numbering

I have not been able to find help with this particular
problem anywhere:

Since upgrading to XP, I am unable to create defined
numberings style that span multiple levels. For example,
a section 2.1 may have items that begin with 2.1.1, and
section 2.2 may have items to begin with 2.2.1, 2.2.1.2.
etc. I can define levels, but when I select 'Number 2' for
example, it shows up as 1.1 regardless of the heading
number of the section and hitting 'restart numbering' has
no effect. This is making me crazy. I consider myself an
expert Word user, have consulted other tech writers who
all say it is now impossible to do this in Word.

Hi Liz

Well, you've found the right place now <g>. Yes, Word's numbering is
perverse and buggy, but you will find you can set up a stable numbering
system that does exactly what you want if you follow Shauna Kelly's
instructions at

You might do the other tech writers a favour and point them there too.

I can appreciate your frustration, but must also add that
there is indeed a way. I'm including a link to Shauna

numbering in Word.
