.NET AddIn on Office on a 64-bit machine

Hello Dave,

SvenC is right. Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other client-side
Office products have no 64bit version released. 32bit applications run
under WoW64 subsystem on all 64bit versions of Windows. Because a 32bit
process (e.g. Office Word process) cannot load a 64bit module into its
process space, and vice versa, we need to make sure that our add-in
solution is not set to target the 64bit environment only. Also note that,
32bit components are registered to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW64\CLSID in a 64bit
system while 64bit components are registered to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns, or need anything else.

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting

Hi David,
Is there anything special we need to do if Office is running on a
64-bit system? It appears that it still calls our AddIn in 32-bit
mode.

Office is a 32-bit app so it can only use 32-bit addins.
