network diagram with option to click on an object

Hi ..

I am trying to create a network diagram that is huge. I found that perhaps
it was best to either create it on multiple pages or.. or make it so that you
start at the core and clicking you down the layers of networks/vlans.

But how do one do that.. I can see that visio works with layers. But how is
it possible to make an object (eg. cloud with text in it) clickable to show /
hide this or that layer?

You've got some serious decisions to make first in that you're mixing
discussion on both a logical and physical topology level (clouds and vlans
being logical, switching and routing being physical). You can add to this
your desire to be able to click to show different design issues. At it's
simplist you could have different views on different pages and then have
hyperlinks to take you to the different views. A common oversight by many is
that you can have multiple hyperlinks in a single shape (an example might be
to have hyperlink to a physical view and a hyperlink to a logical view).
Layers can be especially useful for when working with a physical view of a
single site (vlan, cabling, power, network documentation, etc). One
advantage of layers is that you can turn attributes on and off for each of
them (display, print, etc). Switched WAN topologies (frame relay, x.25) also
lend themselves to layered views.
Just as in the design phase it would probably be best to start at a logical
view and then move to more detailed diagrams as appropriate.

Hi Al.

You are right. I was planing on doing the logical view "on top" and then -
when clicking on a logical shape - it bores down on the physical level.

I will try the "multiple pages" with hyperlinks.

Thank you for your answer.

Osoma,
I have created a network diagram similar to your description.
My advise is:
make sure YOU are the only person who creates it and makes the decisions as
to how it reacts. the more people you involve into the mix, the longer it
will take to see the light of day !
