Network Error

Hello,

I recently moved the backed of one of my databases to
a 'server' computer. It worked just fine the first few
times I opened it, but now whenever I try I get the error

The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file
'\\Server\SharedDocs\Databases\Backends\Tracking_BE.mdb'.
It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you
need permission to view its data.

I haven't changed anything, so I can't understand why
this error is appearing now, but wasn't an issue before.
I did run a windows update on the 'Server' computer, but
that's all...

Hi,

My name is Amy Vargo. Thank you for using the Microsoft Access Newsgroups.

You might have a leftover ldb file that needs to be deleted. If the
database is in a shared folder, make sure all users have full permissions
to the folder. When you open a database, an .ldb file is automatically
created in the same folder as the .mdb, thus you need create permissions,
and when you close the database, the .ldb file needs to delete itself, so
you need Delete permissions. If Access unexpectedly closes, you might
have a leftover .ldb file that needs to be deleted. Make sure no one has
the file open, then look in the folder where your .mdb is saved. If there
is a .ldb file, delete it.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Hello,

Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately the .ldb file
does not seem to be the problem. I can't open any of the
databases on that particular computer. It's strange...
I'm able to access other files, just not MS Access
databases. I can access databases residing on other
computers in the network as well...

Any Suggestions?

Vel.

According to my experience, you may need to use the link
table manager to relink the table.
Hope this can help

Hum, do you have correct permissions to that folder?

Try dragging the data file your computer, and then try opening it.

Perhaps you don't have proper permissions to that folder. It is also
possible that some permissions were given to the file when it was copied.

A few years ago I remember popping in a floppy disk with a mdb file on it. I
plugged the disk into a floppy drive on the server. I then copied the file
to a dir that was shared full. However, no one in the office could use the
file! And, I make sure that the dir was fully shared

It turns out that windows 2000/xp has a much more complex security model
then the old win9x stuff. A INDIVIDUAL file can have all kinds of
permissions assigned to it. It turned out that I had copied the file from
the floppy disk to the desktop on the server. At that point, the file
inherited certain server file permissions. Now, anywhere I copied that file,
those permissions stayed with the file!

You might want to right click the file when it is on the server, and work
you way thought the security menus. Make sure that full rights are assigned
to the one file.

Either use all users, or authenticated users.

My only point here is that a individual file on a win2000/xp box can have
some security attached it...
