Network problem

Dudley

I have Access 2000 on a peer to peer network on Windows XP with the back end
on my colleague's computer. Until ten days ago I could open a form linked to
the back end from my computer, but now I always get the message 'It is
already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view
its data. '

I have found that the problem does not apply to other programs such as Word
and Excel, and when I tried opening another mdb in a different folder I got a
message that it is outside my intranet or on an untrusted site.. I have
raised this before and was advised to look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q303650 , but this did
not help.

As it worked until recently I wonder whether Access might be corrupted and I
should uninstall and re-install it. Might this cause any problems?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks
Dudley

Hi Dudley,
This is normally caused because an Access thread not closing properly, a
hicup. A reboot of your colleague's computer should fix it, because no MS
Access thread can survive a reboot. There are a number of other things that
could cause this but this is the most obvious. If this does not fix let me
know and I will post everything else.

Cheers,
Barry

Dudley,

Put a word document in the BE folder on your colleges PC an see if you can
edit and save it. If not it is a permissions problem on the shared DB folder.

If the above isn't the problem then you can use the /decompile switch on
your startup command line and then do a compact and repair on your desktop FE.

If that doesn't fix it test your FE by putting it on your collegue's PC and
see if it runs from there. If it doesn't but your collegues FE does then move
your collegue's FE to your PC and relink to the tables.

If above doesn't fix then open Word and run "Detect and Repair" under Help.

If above do not work, let me know.

Cheers,
Barry

Yeah; I'd just reccomend moving to Access Data Projects and SQL Server

MDB isn't reliable enough for a single record nor a single user

Thanks very much for your help. I confirmed that I can edit a Word document
in the BE folder, but I do not understand about decompiling. It did occur to
me to move the BE to my computer (I had to use a flash drive!), and then
re-linking the FEs. This worked and I can now open the FEs on both computers,
but should I decompile anyway, and if so and what is the best site for advice
on this?

Dudley.

I would decompile the FE .mdb file (regularly), it fixes quite a few
problems. Look at :- http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/decompile.htm for
more details.

Regularly being no more than, say, once a month. I may only do it once every six
months. Basically only when I notice the startup to the first form taking longer
than a second or two. There is seldom, unless you get a specific message such as
VBA332.dll something or other, to decompile more often.
