Network Share Problem

We have a Windows 2003 Server with SP1 installed. There is a mapped drive
which contains a file eg filename.xls which all users can access on their
workstations.

Recently we have started having problems when users open this workbook and
make changes and then save back to the network share in that they are having
problems saving this file.

On looking in the shared drive, as each user saves the workbook, the
original filename.xls workbook is there but there is also another file with
random numbers and no file extension which is the same size as the original.
Today 32 people have opened the file and worked on it and there are 32
different files with different numbers but no file extension as well as the
original.

There comes a point were a user will try to save and receive errors on
saving and then the original filename.xls will disappear and have to restored
from backup

This appears to be the only file that we are having this problems with as
other Excel files are opened over the network and saved back to the original
location.
Some users are using Office 2000 and others Office 2003.

The "Everyone" Group has Modify Security permissions on the Folder this file
is located in and these are inherited from the parent folder. On checking the
actual problem file, the Modify permission for Everyone is also on the file
itself.

Can anyone assist with this problem.

Thanks

JKelly
