networked office 2003 files only open as read only

having a problem with 1 new networked pc which will only open office 2003
networked files as read only, when they are not read only files. PC is dell
optiplex 740 windows xp professional SP2. both office and xp have been fully
updated. network server runs windows server 2003. Office on this pc can
create and save new files to the network and has no problem opening these,
just files already existing on this network open as read only. The problem
started with just microsoft access files but is now all office applications.
Can anyone help please?
