New 2008 Word doesn't open - freezes machine

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

installed mac 2008 from 2008 office disk. all of the other applications launch fine, but word just hangs on the opening box, then freezes the machine.

help?

That's often bad preferences inherited from a previous version, or a bad
font cache.

However, you may not yet have applied all the updates to Office 2008.

If not, download the Office 12.2.1 update from Microsoft website and run it
from your desktop.

That will fix a large number of bugs and should also fix this issue
