New Basic Installation of Project Server 2007

I'm trying to install Project Server 2007 for evaluation. I've had a
few issues and hopefully someone can help me out. When I attempt to
install after the machine is joined to the domain, setup fails because
of SQL errors. Here's some additional background:

- machine is joined to a domain
- one of our policies renames the local admin account, does this cause
any problems?

When I install Project Server 2007 when the machine is not joined to a
domain, everything installs fine. After I join the server to the
domain, I can't seem to provision sites anymore. After checking the
logs, I have more SQL errors. Any help is appreciated.

I strongly suspect this is related to permission problems. First
thing: I would make sure that you remove and reinstall IIS after
joining the server to the domain. This changes some of the service
accounts that IIS uses. Then run the Project Server installer and
configuration using a domain account that has the appropriate
permissions on the SQL server. (I don't remember the list off the top
of my head.)

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your prompt reply James. I'm doing a clean installation of
Windows 2003 now. I'll post my results as soon as I can. Thanks.

OK, now I'm not so sure about the permissions being the problem. It
looks like the install of MSDE / SQL Express is failing. This is the
included database engine that is installed when you perform a "Basic
Install."

I'm not sure why this is the case. Is it possible that your domain
includes some policies that prevent the installation of certain
software or system services? I would guess that SQL Express installs
and changes a number of system services. Maybe this is causing the
failure.

I don't have much more in the way of ideas on this.

jsmith:

May I ask what you want to evaluate? The installation that you are choosing
gives you a very limited installation which omits many enterprise features.
Are you aware of that and is that acceptable to you? If not, there's not
sense in pursuing diagnostics.
