That's a matter of how the program is designed & is in compliance with
Apple's OS X guidelines for software of its type. There's literally nothing
you can do in Word without having a file open. The new blank document is not
an issue because it will evaporate as soon as you open a different file --
provided you haven't modified the new one. It isn't like you have a limited
supply of blank documents & are wasting them
The "time to time" you refer to is most likely when you leave no Word
documents open while Word continues to run, switch to another app, then
switch back to Word later by clicking the Dock icon. Again, this is
determined by the OS. To switch back to Word without causing a new document
to be created use the Command+Tab method rather than the Dock icon.
