New Compatibility Pack won't Open any 2007 files

I have several files I have created in Beta2 and B2TR of Office 2007 running
on a Vista RC1 machine. I have installed the latest file converter for 2003
to open those files on my XP Pro machine.

None of the files, Word or Excel, can open, they both give me errors. I have
tried re-opening them in B2TR, just to make sure, ran the compatibility
checker and re-saved them, and they still won't open. I uninstalled all the
past beta converters (which btw used to work until I updated to the post-B2TR
converter release), and installed the one released 11/6 - no change, still
can't open any files.

Since we are at RTM, I was hoping that these converters would be finalized
and WORKING.

Any suggestions?

Hi E.,

Does tha Windows XP machine have only Office 2003 on it or do you have (or has had) any Office 2007 Beta 2 or B2TR apps installed on
it?

That KB seemed right on, not sure why I couldn't find it yesterday. It
addresses my problems, just doesn't solve it for the following reasons:

1. I can't find that ADM, where can I download it?
2. I can't find those KEYS,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Security\FileOpenBlock
All I have is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\ - no sub-keys

Since it was just published it may not have been indexed for searching
when you looked.

I'm not sure about the ADM or the Registry keys and unfortunately I
can't install the Compatibility Pack on my system to check it out.
(Tried that already and that didn't work out too well!)

Personally, I would remove the RTM version and reinstall the beta
version if you actually need to open the files. Office 2007 RTM is not
publicly available so you're not going to encounter any files created
using the RTM version anyway. Microsoft is currently preparing for the
Office 2007 release. This means they are getting utilities made
available for download, creating documentation, etc. I'd give them
another week on this - I suspect everything isn't in place just yet.

Thankfully they are still available but I don't know how long the page
will be up since the Office preview site was officially taken down so
download it while you can:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/converter.mspx

Also, Microsoft's current recommendation is to standardize on the
legacy file formats in Office 2007 if it is necessary to enforce a
default across multiple versions of Office. IOW, until the transition
from the various beta versions to the RTM version is complete you may
want to use the Office 97 - 2003 file formats. As you may have noted
in the article, the XML schema for the new Open XML file format
underwent a few changes during the beta so there are a few variations
floating around.

Do you know, now that it is RTM, if they will release an MSI file of the
converter so that we can use Group Policy to push it out. Once it starts
selling retail, its is likely that we will get new format files prior to us
upgrading internally.

Thanks for the help.

That I don't know, but since there will be Administrative Templates
available it only makes sense to incorporate the ability to push it
out to users.

Also, I did find out the Administrative Templates aren't available yet
so as I suspected they are still putting everything into place in
preparation for the release.

I opened the FileFormatConverters.exe file with WinZip and extracted
the contents to a network folder. I was able to deploy the O12Conv.MSI
using Group Policy without any problems.

Hi Joe,

Yes :) That is the suggested procedure. I thought I had posted that as well a few days ago, but seems that it was only my list of
'good intentions' <g>. Thank you for posting that.

Hi guys,
I decompressed the .exe file to a network share, and added the .msi to
the computer assigned software install GPO.

Work fine, rolls out the msi, however, it shows me the new docx files
and allows me to open them, but instead of displaying them it says,
this is made from a newer version of office and do I want to download
the update to view the document?

It takes me back to the Office 2007 Compatibility pack download page.
Did you manage to get it to install the full version without prompting?

I am having the same issue as well. It appears that the software is being
installed correctly, however it does not allow me to open the new file
formats. In addition, it is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs list. I
suspect that the GPO install fails during the process.
