Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Just got a new MacBook and installed Office:Mac 2004 seemingly without problems from a licensed disk. BUT nothing on the application will work at all. when I try to open a Word document or do any other work I get this error message...

Upgrage Verification Office:Mac

"This software is an upgrade to an earlier version of the software. To continue installation, click Browse and select the folder that contains the earlier version of the software..."

When I do that it points me to choose a folder called Microsoft User Data, but the Mac helpline said that was probably installed when I did the Microsoft installation and anyway, it doesn't actually let me choose anything to overwrite or upgrade.

PLEASE help! ALL my work is in Word and I'm already a week behind because of my last Mac dying.

It sounds like you are using an upgrade cd. It's looking for verification
that you have a legitimate copy. See instructions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/upgrade.html>

If you have your old computer, you can just drag over the Office 2004
folder. You'll have to hunt and pick to get all the files like Spotlight
importer files and fonts.
