New Computer

Hi folks. I still visit these groups, but don't reply as much. Been
pretty busy lately. Reworked the web site, but kept all my mac office
pages in place without changing them. Been using a PC mostly lately.
Until Tiger came out and I upgraded. Then I realized how much I was
missing my Mac.

I ordered a new computer from the Apple store. Should be here between
next Wednesday and Friday. I'm hoping Wednesday! ;-)

My 700 MHz iBook is aging gracefully. I had $3000 set aside to purchase
my new mac (whatever one that turned out to be), but when they
announced the Intel Macs coming, I decided to wait for them. I made the
mistake of going to CompUSA and playing with the new Macs there, and
getting to feel their raw speed, I broke down and decided to buy one.
Just my luck, they had no more in stock. Any model Powerbook.

So a quick trip to the online Apple store, and I customized a 15-inch
book: 1.67 GHz G4, 1 gig memory, 128 Meg VRAM, and 100 Gig HD. I was
going to go with the 12-inch because I love the size of my iBook, but
the backlit screen was what changed my mind. I think my new Motorola
RAZR v3 has something to do with it too. That is one beautiful phone,
and it iSyncs, and it's the same material as the Powerbooks. With my
Federal Government discount, it came out to $2437 before taxes. Not too
shabby huh? I look forward to seeing how quick Office runs on that one.
It runs satisfactorily on this old iBook, so I can't imagine what it
will be like on a 1.67 Ghz

I started a blog on my web site re-design if anyone is interested.

I'll give this iBook to a friend of mine who has been wanting to try a
Mac for some time now.

Hi, Walt!

Have fun with your new PB. My 1.33 GHz, 1GB 17" PB is my primary machine
now, and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

Enjoy.

IMO, 15" PB is definitely the best bet. You'll see how much more space you
get than a 12" - and Fast User Switching rotates! You've configured it well
- 1 GB RAM is a good idea. (What I usually do is get the max feasible
installed in the permanent slot - i.e. 512 MB - and then max out the other
slot with RAM from Other World Computing or Crucial. 1 GB from them can be
comparable in cost with 512 MB from Apple. But 1 GB total will be fine.)
Don't omit getting the AppleCare: especially for a laptop, it's the best
$200+ you ever spent.

I'll second that, JE! -- the extra acreage on the 17" is so good for two
side-by-side Word docs plus any rectangular toolbars I might need.

Hooked up to a 20" Apple display (not mirrored), on an iCurve stand, with a
full-size keyboard (in my case, the unexcelled old Apple Saratoga keyboard
connected with an iMate gizmo) and with a Kensington TurboMouse trackball --
it's as good as it gets. I work out of several offices, each configured the
same way; I just grab the PowerBook and run to the next one ;-)

We are lucky ...

The Powerbook arrived today! It's like night and day compared to my
iBook! I've got everything transferred over already. What a dream.

Great stuff, Walt!

It will go nicely in the trunk of your Firebird!

Oh, I see you haven't updated http://www.basilweb.net/computer.htm yet!

Cheers,

Thanks Clive!

Yeah, I have to update that page now. The text of the update is
actually being updated, just not posted yet. I'm still using Frontpage
for my site upkeep, and I hardly get on the PC these days in order to
do it.

ciao

Here's my review for anyone interested.

You know, I almost installed Office without removing the Trial. One of
the useful bits of information I've gleaned from this group. ;-)
