new contacts display twice

I just started using Outlook, and for each new contact
the name appears twice in the list of contacts when I
open the "To" dialogue box in a new message. Any
suggestions on how to display each contact name only
once?

You did not mention your Outlook version.
I doubt the same address is listed twice. Perhaps you were not aware that
the Outlook Address Book lists each electronic address separately.
