New doc pg setup ORIENTATION STUCK ON LANDSCP, CANT GET IT TO PORT

New Doc defaults to landscape, 2 columns, cannot change it to portrait.
error msg is right margin too large, even when I change it to one column.
Seems stuck on landscape and won't allow me to change the default.

1. Locate and open your Normal.dot file as described in
Method 1 in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm .
2. Click on File | Page Setup | Margins tab | Portrait | OK.
3. Click on Format | Columns | One | Apply to: Whole document
| OK. Even if "One" already appears to be selected, click on it
anyway.
4. Type a character or two and delete what you just typed.
Save the Normal.dot file and close it.
