New doc starts on top edge of page?

I notice that when copying text from the web into Word for reformatting
before printing, the font often changes to Times New Roman even though I
have the default set to Lucida and the original was neither?

Since one of these instances, new Word docs now open with the cursor right
at the top edge of the page even though the default settings are still
normal. If I then open View Header and Footer, and close then close them,
the cursor moves down to the proper position.

What is going on and how to correct?

For the cursor position, simply move the cursor to the top edge just
below the ruler, so the mouse cursor changes to a pair of little boxes
containing arrows and the tooltip says Show White Space. Click there.
This is a shortcut for going to Tools > Options > View and checking
the box for "White space between pages". See
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/WhiteSpace.htm for more.

To fix the font-change issue, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/FormatOfTextChanges.html. It
assumes you're copying from one document to another, but copying from
a web page is similar.

Lovely,

Thanks very much Jay - yet another tick box I hadn't noticed!

As for styles, this will take me a bit of getting used to and some more
reading I think. I still don't understand why some formatting steadfastly
refuses to change - such as when I paste into an e-mail and then can't add
anything that isn't in the pasted item's style and highlighting it and
trying to change it is ignored.

Anyhow: one step at a time,

Regards,
SteveH
