New Doc Templates in Word 2003?

In Word 2000, when I chose New Document, I could choose what type such as
letter, fax, memo, etc. I found this really handy when I wanted to send
something out "quick and dirty" and still look professional as I could choose
from Contemporary, etc. styles.

Now when I choose File > New it gives me the option of Blank document but
not the different types. Is there a way to get the functionality back that
was available in Word 2000 (without me setting up all the doc templates
myself)?

I know I can go to Templates option but that boots me out to on-line
templates. When I look at those, it gives me all types of example letters. I
know how to construct the contents of a letter, I just want the style/mock up
template.

Working on a standalone on XP.

Thx for any help with this basic but very frustrating problem.

File > New (or the New button on the toolbar) opens the New Document task
pane. In the Templates section you should see three blue links: "Templates
on Office Online", "On my computer", and "On my Web sites". Click the "On my
computer" link to open the same dialog you're used to seeing.

I think this runaround is too much clicking for something I use all the
time, so I replaced the New button on the toolbar with one that goes
directly to the dialog. To do that, click Tools > Customize. In the
Categories list, choose All Commands. In the command list, find the
FileNewDialog command. Grab that and drag it up to the toolbar, and drop it
next to the existing New button.

Stupidly, this new button is text only and says "Other...". To make it look
right, first right-click the existing New button and choose Copy Button
Image from the menu. Then right-click the "Other..." button and choose Paste
Button Image. Right-click again and choose Default Style, which gets rid of
the text.

If you want to change the tooltip that appears when you hover over the
button, right-click again and change the Name field in the menu.

Finally, you can drag the original New button off the toolbar -- good
riddance! If you ever want to see the task pane for any reason, it's still
available from the File > New menu item.

Hi Jay,

Thx a mint for your reply and esp. your work around. Your instructions were
so clear it was very easy for me to do too! I would have NEVER figured out
how to do that on my own...thx ever so much as I'd aleady spent a couple of
hours trying to figure it out before I posted. I also learnt a lot from your
post that I can apply to other things in the future.
