New Document always opens

Is there a way to disable the automatic creation of a new document every time i select the office 2008 icon?

No. Not in Mac Word.

Why do you want to? It should go away automatically as soon as you open
another document.

I think John's reply was based on an incomplete description of the
problem:) You're referring to having Word already running with no document
open, having a different program in the foreground, then switching back to
Word by clicking the icon in the Dock, right?

That isn't a Word behavior, it's an OS X behavior & the blank doc created in
that case will not "evaporate" when you open a different one. If it really
bothers you, use Command+Tab to return to the Word window rather than
clicking the Dock icon.
