New documents added with ~$ in first 2 places of title - why?

When I open a saved Word document I find, when I close, that a new document
has been created with the first two characters of the title changed to ~$;
the new document consists of a string of empty "boxes" with what would appear
to be the initials of the user. I usually delete these documents with no
apparent ill effect.

Any advice or help would be appreciated as I have little knowledge of Word
(or computers!).
