"New from Template" entries in task pane are wrong

I deleted some templates from my templates folder and the task pane
continued to reflect the non-existent entries in the "New From
Template" section.

Searching Usenet postings, I couldn't find an answer, so I ended up
figuring it out for myself and wanted to post the answer here for
others.

The entries in this area are maintained in the registry. An example
follows:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Recent
Templates]
"Template1"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\ryk\\Application
Data\\Microsoft\\Templates\\memo.dot"
