New HDD and key code issues.

R

RHuff

I had to replace my HDD and when I did, I copied everything over to the new
drive after formatting the new drive.

After the transfer nothing worked right, so I did a reinstall of my Windows
XP and SP2. I then discovered my office applications didn't work. So I tried
a reinstallation and kept getting the messgae that the key code was invalid.

I downloaded and used the Windows install clean up and that didn't work so I
tried an uninstall of Office and managed to get it off then tried another
fresh
install and I still get the invalid key code message.

I tried entering my key code many different ways using caps and no caps but
none of that works. I've had this program for about three years and had to
use the reinstall only one other time and that went off without a hitch.

Any suggestions?

You can't just copy Office and Windows over to a new hard drive. They must
be reinstalled.

Which version of Office is this and did it come with your computer or did
you buy it separately?

I wasn't aware that copying data from one drive to another (the new C drive)
would be problematic.

After the problems I did do a reinstallation. With Win XP and SP2 the
reinstallation worked fine but the Office (I have the CD full version) it
asked for the key code and when I entered it it gave me the invalid keycode
error message. I bought it (office and Win XP) separately and it was not part
of the PC purchase. I build my own PC's.

Windows and Office both deal with items in the registry. The days of just
copying programs from one computer (or hard drive) to another have been long
gone.

Because you have a retail version, Microsoft can help you.

Exactly where are you getting the key from for the Office
reinstall? It should be on the bottom of the CD case that
the Office CD came in.

Not saying that this is you, but, may people try using the
key from the Win XP install program.

That's a good suggestion. I forget that some people get the two confused
even tho that sticker plainly says Windows.

Thanks for the replies.

I do, in fact, have a key code for each program. So, no, I don't get the two
confused.

I did a drive copy and made the new drive my C drive. The old one, which was
acting up, was trashed. So the transfer was everything from the old drive
placed on the new HDD then that drive was made the master and C drive and
there is no slave.

As stated earlier, nearly all of the other programs worked but if I had
known the drive copy was going to be a problem I would never have done what I
had done. In the past I always backed up my data then put the new HD in then
did a clean reinstallation of the OS and other programs. Should have stuck
with my old ways.

So the number I am using is, in fact, the key code for Office 2003. As
stated earlier, I have done one or two clean reinstallations using both my XP
and Office and it was never an issue.

So, what now?

I know what I'd do - start from scratch. It's not like you have years worth
of data on the new HD.

But that's just the point. I am starting from scratch. However, the program
won't load because it doesn't accept my original key code.

I will try calling the support people.
