New hierarchy for the Time-dimension

H

Henk

Hi All,

I have a question

The standard hierarchy for the dimension "time" in the PScubes is:
Year > Quarter > Month > Week > Day.

When I want to analyse on weekly basis, week 5 shows up two times; one
under January and one under February, because it has days in both
months.

I want the following hierarchy: Year > Week > Day in a second time-
dimension.

Is this possible and how to do it?

Best regards, Henk

Whilst you can't change the time dimension in the cube, you can choose the
information which is displayed in the view or report by only adding year,
week & day.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your help. I do my analyses with Excel 2007, when only
adding the parts of the time dimension you supposed, week 5 still
appears twice, i.e. 1 for the days in January and 1 for the days in
February.

With what tool do you analyze?

Best regards. Henk

Having just created a similar report, I know understand your issue. I don't
believe it's possible to change the time dimension, so creating a simple
view/report based around a pivot table will always give multiple weeks
throughout the year.

You could create the report/view your require from within Reporting
Services, using the timephased data in the Reporting database.

Thanks again Paul.

I'm not using Reporting Services yet.
Do you or anybody else know if it is possible to give a second time
dimension to the cube? It must be somewhere defined how to build up
the time dimension, so I suppose it would be possible to add a second
simular one.

If you are using PS2007 you could make use of a timesheet calendar
which will give you consistent weeks.

Hi Mike,

Yes we make use MSPS2007, the analysis I am making is with the
timesheet cube and its time dimension.

I am not familiar with the timesheet calendar, can you please tell me
where to find and/or configure it?

Thanks, your help is very much appreciated.

Hi Henk

Under Server Settings | Time and Task management you can define both
Financial and Timesheet Periods which are available as dimensions in
the various cubes. Timesheet dimensions will only give you a result if
you are collecting timesheet data, but Financial periods are generally
applicable and allow you to define periods based on a fixed week and
will also let you drill down to the day.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply.

It is clear what you mean, but in the Financial periods there is year
quarter > period (13 in a year) > day

So I'm not able to aggregate at weekly level. Do you know a workaround
to achieve this/

You say above that you are using timesheet cube - in which case the
timesheet period dimension (weekly) is available to you.

The only remaining approach is to customise cubes and add a new
dimension. There are a number of blogs/article on this but you will
need some progarmming / analysis services skills.

Hi Mike,

And many thanks again! I had already figured it out that in the
timesheet cube it works, that is not the most wanted solution, because
I also want the ability in the other (i.e. non-timesheet-based) cubes.

I would be pleased with you other suggestion. Do you happen to know a
good blog/ article which describes how to customise your cube? I
already searched the blogs of Brian Smith and Chris Boyd, but couldn't
find an article which makes it clear to me. I have colleguaes who have
the programming/ analysis services skills to deploy this.

Kind regards, Henk
