New Installation - Good Book, Any Advice?

K

Karl Burrows

I am new to Project Server and am getting ready to set it up for 10 users in
our network, some local and some remote. I did a search for books tonight
and there only seem to be 3 or 4 on the market that deal with the server
side. I need some good info on initial setup, choices and pitfalls on
installation, configuration, client-side setup, etc.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks!

Consider both the books from MS ProjectExperts (i.e. Gary Cheftz and Dale
Howard who often answer questions here - especially Gary).

I suspect the one you want is "Administering an Enterprise PMO"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0975982818/heme0f/104-4462430-5151114
but also "Managing Enterprise Projects"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/097598280X/heme0f/104-4462430-5151114
is good.

These are large book (letter format) with ca 400 pages each and are setup as
training lessons.

Microsoft did a very good job this time in their Installation Guides for
Project Server 2003. They have a single server version that sounds like it
would be perfect for 10 users. They have included a checklist and then
sections behind the checklist for fuerther explanation and they are FREE for
download. Gary and Dale's books are better for after the installation in my
opinion and are full of great information.

Kevin is correct. The Microsoft documents are your best bet for
installation. Our books pickup where Microsoft left off. And, that's from
the horses mouth. There's also a new book out authored by the folks at
Quantum PM. I haven't had time to read it yet, but you can't have too much
guidance when approaching this beast. These are the only three books
available specifically focused on Project Server.

There's me actually answering the question (books) rather than the intent of
the question. Typical.

No excuse. I've used Microsoft's single server installation guide (non-book
!!) and been able with it to install Project Server 2003 with no problems.

I.e. you are spot on (and about Gary and Dale's books being full of great
information)

Gary, I just ordered your book today, but would love the link to the install
checklist. I couldn't find it through the myriad of MS links.

Thanks!

Got a link? I can't find it on the MS site. Thanks!
