New License Not Recognized

D

dstark

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

When 2008 was first released, I bought a single-license copy to play around with while waiting for our volume license to come through. I also installed it on a colleague's computer so she could do the same. As expected, we get an "exceeds the number of installations permitted" message if we try to use it at the same time.

But last week, the volume license version came through and after uninstalling the single-license copy and re-installing the volume-license copy I still the message.

I uninstalled again and cleared out the leftover preferences and application support files (that I could find) but I still get the message after re-installing.

What gives? Any help? Thanks in advance.

The problem may be how you are deleting the Office (or word install) the
only proper way to kill all files including hidden preferences files or
other components; is to use the "Uninstaller" located in the Office
Directory. (It leaves any date Files created alone.)

Then reinstall and apply any updates and patches in order.

Usually dumping just the Office Directory in the trash emptying and
starting over doesn't help the bad component or Preference file will
still be there.

Hi Phillip:

No, that method specifically will not solve this issue. Remove Office is
designed to leave the licence key files untouched, and that's what he needs
to change.

Instead, delete these two files:

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:Office 2008:Microsoft Office 2008
Settings.plist

where ~ is your home folder, and

HD:Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Office:OfficePID.plist

When you start any Office app, you'll be asked to re-enter the CD Key and
all your user information.

Cheers

Hmm! I've been hearing for years the only proper method to remove office
completely and start over was to use uninstaller application that just
dumping the office folder an reinstalling only made things worse.

Shouldn't the uninstaller be picking up all files hidden or otherwise
and remove everything except data files?

Phillip!!! PLEASE be CAREFUL what you say in here. People are likely to
believe you!!

"Dumping the Office 2008" folder practically guarantees a horrible mess that
takes days to recover from. I've heard of machines needing a re-install of
the complete operating system and all the applications after doing that :)

That's not what I recommended. You will see that I named two very specific
files that must be removed as a pair...
Due to an oversight, the Office 2008 Remove Office Tool doesn't have the
needed function.

I cannot believe they left it out. But it was never part of the original
design, it was an 'Easter egg' inserted to make life easier for the
Microsoft coders.

When they made the new Remove Office, they dropped the function, since it
was never supposed to be there in the first place. They then realised with
horror that it was one of the most frequently used functions of the applet
:)

Hopefully, it will be back in the next version.

Cheers

Look did you read what I said part of what I said was "...that just

"

and I made reference to using the uninstaller.

I'm not advocating Just dumping the folder. Just as I don't advocate
dragging and dropping the Office page from the CD/DVD thought even MS
say you can do so. I always advocate using The installer.

Just was assuming that when *all else failed* using the *uninstaller*
you can start over from scratch.

well apparently not. Please don't assume I am advocating something I am
not! :-( I was not and am not. I was asking a question.
