new mac book, installed office mac but not completely working

I have just purchased a new mac book. Since I had previously bought
Office Mac for my old computer (iMac), I installed the whole thing on
this new computer. It works if I do a new document. However, when I
try to open an email with a Word document attachment, it
automatically opens up the trial Office Mac that came with my
computer. I tried putting the trial office mac in the trash can, but
then when I try to open up the document, it says that the "application
'microsoft word' failed to open the attachment".

You're [yet another] victim of the Test Drive Plague as well as a common
misconception in OS X.

Point 1 - The Misconception: Not all software can be *removed* by simply
dragging a folder to the Trash. This is especially true when it is actually
a _suite_ of inter-related applications and involve sophisticated
integration with the operating system.

Point 2 - The Plague: The Test Drive is one of those described above & the
remnants left behind will prevent *any* installation of Office from running
properly as long as they continue to exist. Further, advance notice of the
impending malady is discreetly hidden in such a way as to make it virtually
unnoticeable except to the most anal user who devours every syllable of
every word of every installation dialog & further investigates every
conceivable aspect of everything before sticking so much as the tip of one
toe in the water:) IOW, the installation of the live Office doesn't remove
the Test Drive automatically, nor does it clearly prompt the user to do so.

NOTE: If you have any customizations (toolbar, menus, macros, templates,
etc.) see the instructions at:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/RemoveReinstall.html

In your MS Office 2004 folder you'll find an Additional Tools folder with a
Remove Office folder containing the Remove Office utility. Run this *at
least* twice to remove all traces of all versions of Office. Restart your
Mac & empty the Trash.

Then reinstall Office 2004, apply the most current update (11.3.5) from the
Mactopia website:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/downl
oad/Office2004/Office2004_1135.xml

It would also be a good idea to run Apple's Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions after the update just to be on the safe side... May not be
necessary in the minds of some, but it can't hurt:)

This should put you back into operation. If you have any further problems
post back with details.

THANKS! The websites you sent me were especially helpfull.
Unfortunately now I have another problem.
I evidentally (and stupidly) have thrown out the box that came with my
Office Mac v.X
Now that I have successfully taken off the old, and reinstalled the
new, it is asking for my CD Key.
Please tell me that there is another way to get this number!!!
(Perhaps it is hidden somewhere on my old computer?)

If you can use ³Remove Office² to get rid of the test drive, you should be
able to copy over your Microsoft preferences to the new computer. It will
contain your invisible CD Key.
