New Macbook with OS X Leopard won't load Office 2004

T

tamicarp

I just bought a new Macbook with the Leopard OS 10.5 Operating system. I
purchased the Office 2004 for Mac from my college. When I place the disk
into the Macbook, it takes forever to open. When it does, it's calculated
the available disk space at 1/2 of the real free space and the application
install icon has a "not" symbol over it. When I double click it anyway, I
get the following type of error message "cannot open the install application
since the classic version is no longer supported". I uninstalled the trail
version, done everything but it won't install. This is a brand new computer
with nothing else installed!! What's wrong??

This sounds like your Leopard install has problems. Be sure to run Software
Update to install the latest Leopard updates. Switch to a new User in System
Preferences to see if you can install there. This will eliminate any
conflicts in your User's folder. If you can't install in the new User, then
I would contact Apple support.

If you still are having problems, then restart and run Repair Permissions.

Using Repair Permissions after installing MS Office or any application that
uses an installer is often advised. To use Repair Permissions:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
4. Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD. Updates contain a newer versions of the application's
permissions.

Hi,

It sounds to me like you have the installer for Office 2001 or Office 98.
It's trying to install in OS 9 (Classic) which does not exist in Leopard.

Was the Office packaging sealed? I have a sneaking suspicion that someone
bought the package, swapped the disks, then returned it for a refund.
Examine the labeling on the disk to verify that it *is* 2004.

I am having a similar problem. New MacBook, new purchase of Office
2004 Student Teacher Edition and the install file won't open giving
the "classic environment not supported" error message. Tried creating
a new admin user, same error message. I had uninstalled the trial
version last week, prior to receiving the new software. Can't find
anything about why this should be a problem. Brand new copy of

Perform a Drag and Drop installation. The Installer requires Classic to
run, but you can still drag-and-drop.

Actually, trying to drag and drop the entire folder caused Finder to
crash.

Tried the Office CD in a older MacBookPro, and it would not even read
the CD. Next we tried to read the CD with the new MacBook using a 4
year old external NEC CD drive, that worked. Dragged and dropped the
entire office folder to the new MacBook HD. No more problem.

THANKS!!

Office 2004 crashes when it gets to the screen where you fill in the user
information for registration purposes. It happens if I do a drag and drop or
if I try and do a custom install from the CD. I have to force quit out.
This is on a new iMac running Leopard with all sw updates. The only thing I
see as a common thread is removing the test drive which I did...

You've got bad preferences in there.

Run the Office Remover tool again to rake out everything "Microsoft" in your
various preference locations and try again.

Also: Re-name your Microsoft User Data folder. This crash can happen if
Office cannot read the content of the MUD because it hasn't got its updates
applied yet.

If that's your problem, re-name the MUD, apply Office updates 10.3.5 and
later, then re-start Office. Once it is running, close it, and transfer the
content from the old MUD into the new one.

There was a change to the MUD format, done by one of the service packs. A
newly-installed copy from the CD doesn't have the update, and can't read the
later version MUD.

Cheers

Another question, very similar.

New MacBook w/ Leopard and all software updates, I can't get it to install
Office 2004. After sidestepping the installer, I tried dragging the "Office"
folder right to the applications folder. Everytime, I got this message:

"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in ".DS_Store"
could not be read or written."
(Error code -36)

I took the software back to my school's store, and they tried it on another
Mac with leopard and it worked okay. Any ideas of what the problem is?

Errors in this range are usually disk errors. User Disk Utility to check

I took the software back to my school's store, and they tried it on another

Do an "Archive & Install" of Leopard. I'm suspicious that your new MacBook
might have a defective drive. I would document this with Apple Care.

I used Disk Utility, and it said that my disk was fine. Also, I unistalled
the office trial version, so I know it's not that. Also, there are no

That's the CD Drive that's bad, and the Disk Utility can't check that.

Copy the content of the disk off on another machine and burn yourself a new
CD :) You're getting read errors on the CD. A new CD "might" read OK in
that drive. Or not. But it will only cost you a blank CD to find out...

Cheers
