New Mail Notification causes total lock up.

Hello all,
I have a user that is having problems with Outlook New Mail Notification.
It started with Outlook 2002(XP). Whenever the user would get a new email and
the notification popped up, the computer would freeze and have to be rebooted.
The user was due for an upgrade to Office 2003, so I went ahead with the
upgrade hoping it might solve the issue. It did not. Even in Outlook 2003,
when the user gets a New Mail Notification, the computer *sometimes* freezes.
Not all the time. Same behavior as before the upgrade. any of you guys have
any ideas? It's Windows Firewall related as that has been completely disabled.
Not even sure where else to start.
