New mailbox with custom smtp of deleted alias not resolving correc

Recently a user requested that their AD account be changed to a new login
name. We created the new account, deleted the old one and then gave the new
account the same name and configured a custom smtp address that is the same
as the old account. On the Exchange server in the Global address list I
deleted the old entry and I can see the new account alias. Sending to the
account from outside our network works fine but Exchange clients working in
Cached mode get mail bounced back because their address book entry is
pointing to the old alias, not the new one.

Please help.

These will be updated the next time Exchange publishes the offline address
list and the CEM users retrieve that list. Usually this is within 24 hours
after the change. Note that the users will have to use the To: function the
first time they address a mail to that user and do not use the AutoSuggest
name. This one has to be deleted (manually) when it pops-up.

You could have saved yourself a lot of problems by using the Rename feature
in AD instead.

Rename would have changed the display name...but I wanted to change the login
name. Would it have worked for that? Also, it has been more than 4 days since
the change and I am still experiencing the error. Does exchange wait for some
window of inactivity to publish the address book? (I have a backup running
during the night...maybe that is preventing the republishing?)

Changing the login name would be even eassier (on the Account tab of the
user item in AD U&C).
Are they actually using the Address Book by pressing on To: or are they
using the AutoSuggest feature which pops up when typing in the To: line.

They are going through the address book. I also tried typing in the email
address pointing to the new account and it auto-suggests back to the wrong
account. However, since I have posted I found a solution by taking Outlook
out of cached mode, opened Outlook, closed Outlook, put it back in cached
mode and then the address book entry would be correct.

Same results would be if you choose to download the address book through
Tools-> Send/Receive or delete the oab-files or uoab-files from the user
profiles. Saves you from redownloading the entire mailbox ;-)
