New master not being used on diagram

I have a diagram which has several instances of a master placed on it.
Subsequently I have changed the Master, now has additional custom
properties. I know the existing shapes will not be updated as they
reference the document stencil. However, if I place a instance of the
new master on my diagram, it appears to be the old version as the
custom properties have not changed. It seems if I remove all traces of
the previous master from the diagram, then placement of the new master
behaves correctly.

I found my problem. My custom property was displaying a fixed list
which had changed. However, the existing value in the custom property
was not in the list. When prompted to select an item from the list, I
did not pick anything as the first highlighted entry in the list was
the one i wanted. However, in its wisdom visio decides nothing has
changed even though the value does not match the item in the list.
