New message default font suddenly is underline, can't turn it off

All of a sudden, when I initiate a new e-mail message in Outlook, the default
font is underlined. I cannot turn it off. When I look at the default font
via the tools menu, it shows as NOT underlined, yet when I start a new
message, all words are underlined and I have to mannually turn it off.
