New Office 2007 Product Key will not activate

I have a new HP Laptop with Vista Home Premium and MS Office and Student 2007
Trial Version installed. Trial version has been activated. However, when I
wish to covert to full, or purchased software, the Vista software says that
my Product Key for a new, unused Office Home and Student 2007 is "invalid."
Why is my valid, new, unused Product Key being rejected as an "invalid"
product key? (Product purchased new, sealed from Staples.) How do I get
past this problem, or should I just return the software to the retailer as
dysfunctional?

If this were my computer, I would uninstall the free trial version of
Office 2007, restart the computer, and then install the purchased Office
2007 from the CD/DVD that came in the retail package.

You might also see whether http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895/en-us
"How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to
activate a 2007 Office product" applies to your situation. Hard for me
to say because you didn't quote the error message you got, and I can't
see your screen from here, but I don't know of any Office 2007 error
messages relating to the product key that contain the word "invalid"
which you used twice in your post.
