new problem with defautl view

I've encountered a wierd problem with the "Print Layout" view which has
recently started. This problem is occurring with several different machines,
but not all machines, and patches have been ruled out as a causal factor.

The behavior manifests in the following manner:

User creates a new document, but cannot see or print beyond page 1. when
the view is changed to "Normal", pages appear, but disappear as soon as the
view is changed back.

This behavior is exhibited in new documents. Old documents view and print
fine.

This is an especially wierd and diffucult problem to troubleshoot.

Sounds like bad network printers to me. Try connecting a local printer and
installing the driver locally. Word MUST see a locally installed printer
driver to work correctly.

Go to Format | Columns and click the preset picture for One (even if one
column is already selected), then OK. If this works in a given document,
you'll need to make the same change in Normal.dot.

Terry, thanks for the reply

Hm....
Yes, the clients are all using network printers. Can I use an Adobe logical
printer as a default local printer?

Suzanne,

Thanks for the response. This seems to have done the trick!
Seems a little bit voodoo, and I am not sure what caused it (users swear
they didn't modify the settings).

Many thanks

Yes you can: but be warned that the printer driver is critical to how Word
lays out a document for a particular printer. If you use printer A (even if
it is an Adobe Logical printer), if you switch to printer B to make a print,
it may affect the document layout. This may not be noticeable for short
memos and such like, but for long documents with ToCs and Indices, it may
mess up page length, page numbering, ToCs, etc.

It *is* voodoo, and you can absolve the users of responsibility, as this
seems to happen without human intervention. It has not yet been determined
quite what causes the problem, but at least the solution is known.

The underlying problem, though, is (somewhat) understood. In some versions
of Word, when you format columns using the Columns button, the "Equal column
width" box isn't checked (though that may not be entirely relevant to this
problem). The problem arises when this box isn't checked (clicking the One
preset checks it) and Word somehow gets the idea that you have more than one
column, but Column 1 is full margin width. Naturally, there's nowhere for
the rest of the text to go, since Column 2 has zero width.
