New received messages put in deleted items folder

Most new received messages that did not fall under any other specific rule used to appear in my Inbox. Now they are being put in my deleted items folder, so when I check my email I'll have 30 messages in the deleted items folder and none in the Inbox. I've checked, and it is not an MLM problem. Can't seem to find a rule that is governing this. Any suggestions?

Check again in the Mailing List Manager. It has to be a rule. If it's not
the Mailing List Manager check your custom rules.

Diane:
I agree that it must be a rule, but I can't figure out what I did. (FYI, I am working with Entourage X, not 2008, for the Mac.) Here's what started happening:
Any email that came in that did not fall under a rule and was from an address that is not in my address book (such as, say, from the photo site Snapfish, or a local organization-e.g., theater) used to go to my Inbox automatically. I have rules that send emails from some senders into folders inside the Inbox, but if I had not set up a rule to send an email to a specific place, it went into the general Inbox, unspecified. Suddenly all emails of that type began going into my Deleted Items folder.

The only thing I can think of is that the rule I have that moves things to the Deleted Items folder "unless criteria are met" began being applied to incoming emails like the ones I just described. I have had that rule in place for a long time and it has never been applied that way before, and I don't believe that I have made any changes to it recently. Could it be a change brought about by an update to Entourage or to Leopard?

I have had some trouble with inadvertently creating Mailing List Rules in the MLM that resulted in all my emails being sent to my Travel folder. This is different--only emails that do not meet a rule I created to direct them to a specific folder (for example, Family) are now being directed to the Deleted Items folder instead of the Inbox.

I also had a Schedule set up to delete items (under "Occurence") recurring every 1 day. That caused a real problem if I didn't get to my email for longer than a day, as all those new sent emails that were being directed to the DIF then got deleted before I ever saw them. In fact, that happened yesterday. (I changed the schedule so things have to be deleted manually.) Now I don't know how to get those back.

ANY help you or anyone else can give would be greatly appreciated. I can find nothing in the Entourage Help.

Sorry so long.
J.

I agree that it must be a rule, but I can't figure out what I did.

It's very easy to set up a MLM rule by accident, when you are marking a
message as 'not junk'. The wording of that dialog is ambiguous to say the
least. Please check again. You can't imagine how many times we are told it's
not the MLM only to eventually find that yes it was.

You need to check the destination folder for each Mailing List Manager rule
and each custom rule.
(FYI, I am working with Entourage X, not 2008, for the Mac.)

The MLM issue has been with us since Entourage X. Next to where did my data
go, this is the most asked question.

Troubleshooting rules is very difficult. I suggest that you use categories
to move mail rather than individual addresses. Less likely to cause problems
and if you there are new addresses for that contact it's automatically
covered.

My guess is that you changed something and forgot that is catching the mail
or the rule could be corrupt.

BTW, how many rules do you have?

From your description of your problems, I think a combination of reworking
your rules to use categories and use custom views to further sort your mail
might be a good task.

I can tell your mail is important. Have you upgraded Entourage X to it's
last update? Entourage 10.1.6

Microsoft has greatly reduced prices on Office 2008. If you don't need
Exchange you can get Office 2008 very reasonably. $129.99 ( it was $99.99
last week. Be sure to check around.)
