New task is created in the past

Hi,

when I enter a new task in a project and assign it to a resource, for some
reason Project decides to place it starting on 2-9-2009. I have no idea why
it does that. The default behaviour should be to place it in the first free
timeslot after the last task with the same priority for the given resource.
That way a newly created task would automatically be appended to existing
tasks of the same priority.

Is there a way to get Project to behave like this?

Where do you get the idea that is the default behaviour of Project, or
is this your expectation?

Project does have default behaviour for new tasks: See Menu:
Tools/Options, Tab: Schedule.

Hello jsiegmund,

As you note, that is not the default behavior of Project. Based
upon the setting in Tools > Options, Schedule tab, the default
answer is newly added tasks are scheduled to occur on the start date
of the Project -- in your case 2-9-2009. You can change that
setting to new tasks are schedule on the current date, although that
creates a Start No Earlier Than constraint on the task.

If you want to alter the default schedule, you need to either create
a predecessor/successor relationship for the task, or use the
Resource Leveling command to delay the task based upon the resource
assignment. My suggestion is to create the appropriate relationship
between the new task and other tasks in the project and then use the
Resource Leveling command if necessary to resolve resource
overallocations.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi jsi
As Julie said, the start date of the task defaults to project start. To
change select Project/Project Information and reset. All new tasks without
links will start on that date.
