New to BCM - Esoteric standalone installation scenario questions

Hello Luther and everyone,

I have not used BCM before, and this will be a strictly offline / standalone
installation on an x64 system. Please pardon my questions three. I'm finding
the documentation on BCM to be rather scant, so I am hoping these questions
will come in handy for other users' installation scenarios.

1. I read a cryptic comment to the effect that BCM does not require the
installation of SQL Server. It was a year ago when I first tried it out, and
I wasn't sure I remembered an option NOT to install it. If this is all true,
could I uninstall SQL Server?

2. If there are capabilities added by using SQL Server, is it possible yet
to install a SQL Server 2008 Express edition so that BCM SP1 plays well with
it?

3. This is also a multiboot setup -- I remember that the GUI BCM installer
didn't provide an option to install on a different (shared) applications
partition. Is there a command-line setup option that will allow this? And are
there other issues with 'syncing' BCM between two OSes? (This seems a bit
more mysterious than syncing between two users.)

BCM stores its data in a sql database. If sql is not installed, BCM
won't work.

BCM can only be installed on primary disks for security reasons.
Shares aren't trusted. Even if you could physically get the bits onto
a share, Windows won't run BCM from it.

I have not yet found a thread on the Discussion Group that addresses SQL
Server 2008 Express edition compatibility. Could you take the time to reply
about whether BCM 2007 SP1 will work if I UNINSTALL SQL Server 2005 (let's
assume it's before I get started with the DB), and instead install SQLS08
Express edition? If the answer is, "we haven't tested it," then can you
clarify any precautions I'd need to take during the uninstallation in order
to ensure that I wasn't digging myself into a hole if I need to reinstall
2005?

Any prospect we'll see compatibility issues addressed in a BCM Team Blog
post, or in a hotfix?

BTW, it was me to made the error in saying I'd read that you didn't need the
SQL Server installation -- I got that backwards. What I'd seen was a mention
on the BCM Team Blog in the FAQ on Databases (or maybe the DB administration
FAQ) where a user had asked whether it was possible to forego SQL Server if
they only ever planned to use it via a DB stored on Exchange Server. The
answer to that was -- yes, that works. BCM NEEDS the DB, but the DB doesn't
need to be hosted on the local drive.

In general, the experience has been that BCM works versions of Sql
latter than the version that BCM 2007 shipped with.

However, Sql keeps tightening its security requirements with each new
release, so if you install a newer version you may run into permssion
problems. If you're a sql expert, you'll be able to diagnose those and
tweak the sql configuration to allow sql to create backup files or
allowed shared uesr to connect to a database.

If you're not confident changing sql's permissions, I recommend you
stick with the sql that ships with the version of BCM you are using.
I'm not aware of any compelling features in latter versions of sql,
for a BCM user.

I would only consider running BCM with latter versions of sql if you
have another application that requires Sql 2008, and don't want to run
two different versions of sql on the same machine.
