New to MS Project, trying to calculate vacancy periods

JTF

I have never used Project before and I am trying to accomplish a certain
analysis. I have 23 positions on a project. If a position goes unfilled for
more than 30 days, it is considered "vacant". I am allowed two vacancies.
One I get more than two vacancies, I began to get penalized for the total
number (3 vacancies is 3, not 1 for being over 2). What I need to find out
is given a certain period of time, how many times have I had more than 2
vacancies for over 30 days, and how may vacancies have i had for that period
of time. I currently have a project file with all the positions as tasks with
start and end dates to show the vacancies. I have no idea if this is the way
to go about this or not. Please help. I do not see an easy way to filter
this data or run a report on it.

Hi JTF,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

It sound as though Excel would be a better product for you as Project is a
scheduelling tool which calculates for you the start and finish dates of
tasks based on their duration and predecessor links. If you must use
Project then I suggest you take an introductory course of a few days to
begin with to get you up and running quickly. Meanwhile, you could make a
start by having a look at my series on Microsoft Project in the TechTrax
ezine, particularly #1 introducing Project and the network analysis on which
it is based, at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMFrame.asp?CMD=ArticleSearch&AUTH=23
(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
