New toolbar with + signs over cells?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I received a spreadsheet where the cells has an extra toolbar over the cells. It displays + signs over each cell. When one clicks on the + sign a new group of cells open up. For instance if the cells are A, B and C and I click on the + sign over B I get cells BA, BB, BC etc. How was this created? How are these cells referenced?
Thanks

have you contacted the originator of the spreadsheet?

Sounds like some one has used some form of autofilter and then saved the file. Check Data>Filter>Autofilter to see if this is checked.

What you're seeing is outlines, created by Data/Group and Outline/Group
or Data/Group and Outline/Auto Outline.

Amazingly, the 5 or 6 pages of Help on Outlining in the XL04 Help don't
seem to have made the jump to XL08 - I'd never noticed before.

You can control how outlining works via Data/Group and Outline/Settings.

Here's a description of outlining for WinXL07 - the steps are different,
but the concepts are the same:
