You cannot buy any version of Word for as little as $20 to $50, and there is
certainly not any version of Word that is free except for the trial version
of Office 2003, which is good for only 90 days.

Have a look at
http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
http://www.abisource.com/

The first is a suitend the second is a word processor. Perhaps one or
the other will do everything you need. Both are free.

Well annoyed person, have you actually looked at Windows XP and noticed
WORDPAD? It is a free wordprocessor that comes with Windows (since Windows
3 - possibly before that too). If you search Google, there are many free
downloadable add-ins to make WordPad even more powerful.

IMHO, anything that costs nothing is well worth what you pay for it. Word is
hugely complex and for the most part an excellent program and the
suppliers/writers deserve every penny.
