I own a small busines (8 Employees) and want to start using Project 2003. I was wondering what version to use and advantages to each. I need to be able to have all of my employees see the projects and and add info to them so I was thinking that I needed server. Also do I need pro to use server? Thanks

Hi,

AFAIK no version of Project allows simultaneous updating of Projects.

Does Project Server then allow for concurrent updates of different users
accessing the same project?

Yes, you would need Project Pro to publish project plans to project
server. Here are the links for all the documentation need.
PROJECT SERVER 2003 DOCUMENTATION

Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Configuration Planning Guide
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=20235 (keep checking . it just propped)
The Microsoft Enterprise Project Management (EPM) solution is a flexible
and scalable client-server system that enables organizations of any size to
manage projects of any size and complexity. Implementing this system
requires a thorough understanding of your organization's project management
needs as well as an understanding of numerous integrated Microsoft Windows
applications, components, and technologies. For large organizations, or
those organizations with complex project management needs, this system
requires a diverse team of information technology (IT) professionals.
Note There are currently five sets of data in this book that deal with
two of the deployment scenarios. Additional sets of data will be added to
this book in the near future.
Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Disaster Recovery Guide

Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Installation Guide
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=20233

its related components, including migrating to Project Server 2003 from
Microsoft Project Server 2002 and Project Central, preparing your servers
for installation of Project Server, Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services,
and other related components, deploying your Project Server database, both
manually and automatically through the Project Server Setup program, and

Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Application Configuration Guide
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=20237
Many of the day-to-day activities performed by project managers, resource
managers, and team members depend on a properly configured Enterprise Global
Template (including calendars, outline codes, and custom fields) and a
populated Enterprise Resource Pool. This book outlines what you need to know
about configuring the Enterprise Global Template and populating the
Enterprise Resource Pool, and touches on some of the day-to-day tasks that
project managers, resource managers, and team members will use that depend
on this larger configuration.
Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Administrator's Guide
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=20236
There are a number of important tasks that a Microsoft Office Project
Server 2003 administrator must manage in Microsoft Office Project Web Access
2003 in order for users of Project Web Access and Microsoft Office Project
Professional 2003 to access and interact effectively with Project data.
Topics include managing users, managing security (categories and templates),
managing views, and configuring Project Server settings for your

Hi,

I'm not an expert on Server but to my knowledge, no.
Several people can update a project (with or without Server) but not
simultaneously.

With only 8 users I doubt you can cost-justify deploying
Server - both from a $ and a time perspective.

I would think you could get by with Pro, locating the MPP
on a share and enforcing some sort of checkin/checkout
procedure; also use the email collaboration features.

certainly give that a go and get comfortable with the
application before going for the server/enterprise option.
just my $.02

Hi all,
Just some small precision.
When you do not use server it is best to take Standard.
Pro's extra features are only in the realm of connecting to server.
Stand-alone their functionality is identical.
